Why we partner with education and training providers

We work with many education and training providers because, like us, they too are committed to ensuring that young people receive opportunities to participate in engaging school curriculum and training courses that meet their learning needs and broaden their career pathway aspirations.

In today's modern education and training system, young people often undertake a mix of education and training in multiple settings. This helps to ensure that their learning opportunities are broad, flexible and relevant. By providing such a learning environment young people are more likely to remain engaged in school or their training institution. This approach also helps ensure they receive qualifications and competencies that suit their capability and future education, training and employment goals.

Education and training providers work with us because we are a neutral organisation that can assist them in collaborating with other stakeholders, assist them in identifying current and future education and training needs and opportunities, link them to research materials or projects and profile their successes.

Our education and training partnerships and projects

We work with education and training providers in a variety of ways including the coordination of networks, developing partnerships, providing research opportunities or undertaking research to assist them, and initiating locally needed education and training projects.

Key education and training priorities

Our research has identified the following as key priorities that we will partner with education and training providers to address in the immediate term:

  • The need to establish partnerships that best meet the needs of a very diverse region which is home to 126 schools and providers across both government and non-government sectors.
  • The need to fill gaps in the number of primary to secondary school transition programs and strategies.
  • The need to increase secondary student access to applied learning programs such as the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL), Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) and School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT).
  • The need to enhance perceptions of applied learning programs so that they are held in the same high regard as academic subjects and programs. Similarly, vocational post-school destinations should be held in the same high regard as academic destinations.
  • Increase the adoption of youth leadership and participation practices within schools as an approach that supports youth development, empowerment, community connections and responsibility.
  • The need to support existing regional education and training networks and augment their already good work through consultation and research support.
  • Increase opportunities for business and schools to build partnerships that are sustainable and mutually satisfying.
