Title: Early post-school outcomes of Indigenous youth – the role of literacy and numeracy
Author: Nhi Nguyen
Source: Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY)
Release Date: 2010
Description: Using data from the LSAY, this briefing paper explores the impact of literacy and numeracy levels on the educational gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth. The paper focuses on the early post-school outcomes of Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people between 1999 and 2007. Raising the levels of literacy and numeracy for Indigenous youth would help to improve some of their educational outcomes. However, many Indigenous young people face multiple disadvantages, such as poor access to post-school education and poor health, in addition to low literacy and numeracy levels, which subsequently affect their outcomes.

Title: How Young Indigenous People are Faring
Source: Dusseldorp Skills Forum
Release Date: April 2009
Description: Prime Minister Rudd has made a promise to halve the education and work opportunity gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in ten years. The Forum, in partnership with Reconciliation Australia, has developed two reports as a contribution to this goal. They point to what the gaps are, but also what programs are already working to narrow these gaps. It's not about reinventing the wheel, but about knowing what works and supporting these programs. How Young Indigenous People are Faring uses Census data from 1996, 2001 and 2006 to examine changes in the education and labour force participation of Indigenous youth (15- 29). It's about drawing a line in the sand. Knowing where we are helps us to move forward.
